In a thrilling announcement for boxing enthusiasts, Callum ‘Mundo’ Smith is set to defend his WBO Interim Light Heavyweight Championship against the formidable David Morrell in Liverpool this April. This highly anticipated bout is part of a spectacular North-West double for Matchroom Boxing in the UK, promising an action-packed month for fight fans.

On Saturday, April 18, Smith will make his long-awaited return to Merseyside, stepping into the ring at the M&S Bank Arena for the first time in seven years. His homecoming will be marked by a challenging face-off against the dangerous Cuban fighter, Morrell, who boasts an impressive record of 12-1 with 9 KOs. This fight is not just a homecoming for Smith but a crucial step in his quest for greater glory in the light heavyweight division.

The excitement begins earlier in the month, on Friday, April 3, with another blockbuster event. Team GB Olympian Pat Brown will headline in his hometown of Altrincham at the Planet Ice Arena. Brown, nominated as The Ring Magazine’s 2025 Prospect of the Year, will face Vasil Ducar for the WBA International Cruiserweight Title. This fight represents a significant step up for Brown, showcasing his potential and determination to climb the ranks in the cruiserweight division.

Both fight nights will feature stacked undercards, promising a feast of boxing action. The undercards will include a variety of talented fighters, such as the Croft twins, Ioan and Garan, who will make their Matchroom Boxing debut. Featherweight prospect Alfie Middlemiss will also be in action, along with several other exciting matchups. Details on the undercards and ticket information will be announced soon.

For Callum Smith, this fight is a pivotal moment in his career. Since his last headline fight in Merseyside in November 2019, where he defeated John Ryder for the WBC Diamond Super Middleweight Title, Smith has faced some of the biggest names in boxing. His journey has seen him take on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev, and most recently, a thrilling Fight of the Year contender against Joshua Buatsi in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This victory earned him the WBO Interim crown and solidified his position as a top contender in the light heavyweight division.

Smith, currently ranked third by The Ring at 175 pounds, is eyeing a potential shot against the reigning WBO, WBA, IBF, and The Ring Magazine champion Dmitry Bivol. A victory against Morrell would bring him one step closer to this ultimate goal. Smith’s confidence is palpable as he prepares to fight in front of his home crowd once again.

‘Fighting back in Liverpool is special for me,’ said Smith, reflecting on the significance of his homecoming. ‘There’s nothing like walking out in front of a home crowd that’s supported you from the very start. It gives me a real lift, and I plan to give them a big performance.’

As the anticipation builds, boxing fans can look forward to an unforgettable month of action, showcasing some of the best talent in the sport. With high stakes and thrilling matchups, April promises to be a landmark month for boxing in the UK.
