Jai Opetaia Forfeits IBF Cruiserweight Crown Amid Zuffa Boxing Clash

In a dramatic turn of events, Jai Opetaia has been stripped of his IBF cruiserweight title due to his decision to compete in a Zuffa Boxing match. The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has made it clear that Opetaia’s choice to pursue the inaugural Zuffa Boxing championship has led to this unprecedented move.

The IBF had previously issued an ultimatum to Opetaia, demanding that he choose between defending his IBF title or vying for the vacant Zuffa Boxing title against Brandon Glanton. Despite ongoing negotiations, Opetaia’s team confirmed on March 3 that the fight would not be a unification bout. Instead, any belt awarded by Zuffa would be considered a symbolic trophy.

The IBF has not engaged in any discussions with Zuffa Boxing representatives regarding this bout. This lack of communication underscores the growing tension between traditional sanctioning bodies and emerging boxing promotions. The IBF belt was prominently displayed by Opetaia, the reigning champion, with the Zuffa Boxing belt positioned between Opetaia and Glanton, who are set to compete for that title.

Opetaia and Glanton faced off last night, March 8, 2026, at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the main event of Zuffa Boxing 4. This historic bout marked a significant milestone for Dana White and Turki Al-Sheikh’s boxing promotion. Opetaia dominated Glanton, securing his place as the first-ever Zuffa Boxing champion.

The IBF’s decision to strip Opetaia of his title highlights the organization’s strict adherence to its rules. The IBF insists that champions must defend their titles within the federation’s framework, and any deviation from this path results in severe consequences. Opetaia, however, has been vocal about his ultimate career goal: to fight all the world champions and become the undisputed cruiserweight king.

It is worth noting that Zuffa Boxing did not request Opetaia to vacate his IBF title upon signing him. In fact, Zuffa Boxing showed support for Opetaia’s IBF title reign by posting a video on its social media channels in which the unbeaten boxer stated his intention to defend his IBF title against Glanton.

This situation raises important questions about the future of boxing and the relationship between sanctioning bodies and new promotions. As the sport continues to evolve, the balance of power and the rules governing it will undoubtedly be tested further.
