The historic Mayo-Kerry rivalry is set to transcend the football pitch and ignite the boxing ring this weekend. Eoghan Lavin, the 22-year-old pugilist from Mayo, is poised to bring Western pride to Dublin as he faces off against Liam Walsh in a highly anticipated bout on Queensberry’s St Patrick’s Weekend card this Saturday.

Lavin, trained by former world champion Anthony Crolla, is brimming with confidence ahead of the all-Irish showdown. “This isn’t the first time Mayo and Kerry have locked horns,” Lavin quips, a smile playing on his lips. “But this time, I’m making sure it’s Mayo that comes out on top. They don’t always, but I’ve got this one covered!”

The young prospect isn’t harboring any particular grudge against Kerry. Instead, he’s relishing the opportunity to add a domestic flavor to the event. “It’s a massive show, and it’s great to have another Irish fighter to compete against—it builds hype, especially on a St Patrick’s Weekend bill,” Lavin explains. “Any fight for a title would have been my preference, but the fact that Liam is Irish makes it extra special.”

Lavin’s excitement is palpable as he discusses the significance of the venue. Fighting in Dublin, down by the Docks in the 3Arena, holds a special place in his heart. “I remember the first Katie Taylor fight there,” he recalls. “I left the 3Arena that night and told myself I needed to fight there. It was on my bucket list. To get this opportunity on a nearly sold-out show is incredible.”

The Mayo man is not just fighting for himself but also for the pride of his county. “I’m excited for the fight and the build-up. Fighting on a huge Irish card, representing Mayo, that’s what it’s all about. And this weekend, Mayo pride is coming to Dublin,” Lavin declares.

As the anticipation builds, Lavin’s focus remains unwavering. He understands the importance of this bout, not just for his career but also for his county’s bragging rights. With the support of his Mayo fans behind him, Lavin is ready to step into the ring and make his mark.

In the world of boxing, where every fight tells a story, Lavin is determined to write a new chapter in the Mayo-Kerry rivalry. As the bell rings this Saturday, all eyes will be on the young prospect from Mayo, ready to bring Western pride to the heart of Dublin.
