In the annals of Irish boxing, few stories resonate as deeply as that of Padraig ‘The Hammer’ McCrory. His journey from humble beginnings to headlining arena bills is a testament to his grit and determination. Now, at the age of 37, with a career that has surpassed his wildest dreams and a transition into management well underway, one might think it’s the perfect time for McCrory to hang up his gloves. However, the Belfast native has other plans.
McCrory’s last bout, a loss to Craig Richards at the SSE Arena in March 2025, left a bitter taste in his mouth. It’s not the ending he envisions for his storied career. ‘I feel like I can’t retire on my last performance,’ McCrory admitted. ‘I know there’s much more in me, and I want to go out and have that one last fight where I perform to my ability.’
The mental toll leading up to his previous fight was significant. McCrory revealed that the tragic passing of John Cooney weighed heavily on his mind, affecting his performance. ‘The whole build-up to my last fight, there were so many doubts in my own mind,’ he confessed. ‘I want to prove to myself that I can still do it.’
McCrory’s plan is clear: one final training camp, one final performance, and then closure. This isn’t about a comeback or a title run; it’s about proving to himself and his loyal fans that he can still deliver a memorable performance. ‘All being well, after my next fight I can write it all off, forget about everything and close that chapter,’ he said.
While retirement looms, McCrory won’t be leaving the sport behind. Already deeply involved in guiding fighters and building shows in Belfast, he’s comfortable with what comes next. ‘Boxing, outside my family, is the thing I love the most. Thankfully, I’m in a position where I can stay involved,’ he shared. ‘I’ll miss competing. I’ll miss the buzz. I’ll miss everything that comes with fighting.’
As McCrory prepares for his final bout, the boxing world watches with anticipation. This is more than just a fight; it’s a chance for ‘The Hammer’ to rewrite the final chapter of his remarkable story, to leave the ring on his own terms, and to give his fans one last memory to cherish.
