The welterweight division, a cauldron of elite talent, has witnessed an array of legendary fighters who have etched their names in the annals of boxing history. From the old-time greats like Ted “Kid” Lewis and Jack Britton to the golden age icons such as Sugar Ray Robinson and Kid Gavilan, and the modern era titans Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Thomas Hearns, the 147-pound division has always been a beacon of extraordinary skill and competition. As we traverse the timeline from 1993 to 2023, we revisit some of the most monumental welterweight clashes that set the stage for the historic 2023 showdown between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence.

On the 10th of September, 1993, a bout simply dubbed “The Fight” took place, featuring the Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez and the WBC champion Pernell Whitaker. This mega-bout, contested at a catchweight of 145 pounds, was a clash of titans, with both fighters boasting impressive pedigrees. Chavez, moving up from 140 pounds, brought an incredible 87-bout undefeated streak, while Whitaker, the 1984 Olympic gold medallist, had a single, undeserved points loss in 33 fights. Despite Whitaker’s masterful outboxing of Chavez, the American’s pound-for-pound coronation was marred by controversial scorecards that resulted in a majority draw verdict.

Whitaker’s journey continued, and he gained wide recognition as the sport’s true pound-for-pound king. He made six more successful defenses over the next four years, even venturing north to become a four-weight champion. However, a new superstar was on the rise. Oscar De La Hoya, another Olympic gold medallist and multi-weight champion, captured titles from super featherweight through to 147 pounds, amassing 23 straight victories.

On the 12th of April, 1997, De La Hoya faced Whitaker in a tightly contested bout. Over twelve rounds, De La Hoya’s aggressive style clashed with Whitaker’s slippery yet sublime defensive skills. Although De La Hoya failed to significantly damage the defending champion, the judges awarded him a unanimous decision. This victory, though somewhat controversial, marked the passing of the torch to a new generation of welterweight kings.

Following his win over Whitaker, De La Hoya became the biggest attraction outside of the heavyweight division and a leading contender for the title of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighter. After five successful defenses, including a repeat win over an aging Chavez, De La Hoya took on his most daunting challenge yet. On the 13th of February, 1999, he faced Ike “Bazooka” Quartey, an undefeated fighter with seven defenses of the WBA title. Quartey, known for his formidable skills and potent jab, pushed De La Hoya to the limit, exchanging knockdowns in the sixth round and challenging the American superstar until the final round blitz.

These historic bouts, among others, have shaped the welterweight division into what it is today, setting the stage for the epic clashes that continue to captivate boxing enthusiasts worldwide.
