In the annals of boxing history, few moments stand as stark reminders of the sport’s unpredictability as the night of April 22, 2001. Hasim Rahman, a 20-1 underdog with no prior heavyweight title fight experience, delivered a seismic shock to the boxing world by knocking out Lennox Lewis in the fifth round. This monumental upset took place in Brakpan, South Africa, and saw Rahman seize the WBC, IBF, IBO, and lineal titles in one of the most astonishing victories in boxing lore.

The bout, dubbed “Thunder in Africa,” was held at the Carnival City Casino at an unusual 5:00 a.m. local time to accommodate U.S. prime time on HBO. Lewis, weighing a career-heavy 253½ pounds, was the defending champion fresh off a draw and a subsequent win over Evander Holyfield. Rahman, with a record of 34-2 and 28 KOs, entered the ring with no title experience but left as the undisputed champion.

Lewis, known for his dominance with a powerful jab and ring IQ, initially controlled the early rounds. However, his lack of acclimation to the 5,200-foot altitude proved costly. Arriving only two weeks prior to the fight, Lewis’s conditioning faltered in the fifth round. Rahman seized the moment, landing a devastating overhand right as Lewis backpedaled, dropping him cold. Lewis failed to beat the 10-count at 2:32, marking a stunning end to his reign.

This loss was a significant blemish on Lewis’s otherwise illustrious career. Standing at 6’5″ with a formidable jab, power, and ring intelligence, Lewis was the epitome of a dominant heavyweight. His career included victories over Mike Tyson in 2002 and Vitali Klitschko in 2003, culminating in a retirement record of 41-2-1. However, the defeat to Rahman exposed vulnerabilities, including a suspect chin and occasional lapses in focus.

Rahman’s victory was not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the unpredictable nature of boxing. The fight was later recognized as the Upset of the Year and Knockout of the Year by The Ring magazine, cementing its place in boxing history.

Lewis, however, was not one to be kept down for long. Invoking a rematch clause, he faced Rahman again on November 17, 2001, at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, in a bout titled “Final Judgment.” Lewis regained all his belts with a decisive fourth-round KO, reaffirming his legacy despite the earlier setback.

In the end, the night in Brakpan served as a stark reminder that in the world of boxing, no champion is invincible, and the underdog always has a fighting chance.
