In a recent revelation, the legendary Mike Tyson shared his thoughts on a hypothetical showdown with the reigning heavyweight titlist, Oleksandr Usyk. The former undisputed heavyweight kingpin expressed that he would have “welcomed” the opportunity to face the Ukrainian powerhouse, who currently holds the WBC, WBA, IBO, and IBF titles.

Tyson, known for his ferocious fighting style and unparalleled dominance in the ring during his prime, drew a stark contrast between his era and the current landscape of heavyweight boxing. “Back in my day, we were defending our titles four times a year,” Tyson remarked. “These days, fighters are lucky if they defend their title once every two years.” He did, however, acknowledge Usyk’s activity as relatively impressive for a modern-day heavyweight.

Usyk, boasting an immaculate record of 24 wins with 15 knockouts and no losses, is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title against kickboxing sensation Rico Verhoeven on May 23 in Egypt. This highly anticipated bout, dubbed “The Ring: Glory in Giza,” has garnered significant attention from boxing enthusiasts worldwide.

Verhoeven, a former Glory heavyweight champion, brings a formidable kickboxing record of 66 wins, including 21 knockouts, and 10 losses. His last victory came in June 2025 at the Glory 100 tournament, where he defeated Artem Vakhitov by unanimous decision.

Adding fuel to the fire of heavyweight speculation, promoter Frank Warren has expressed openness to the idea of Usyk facing the winner of the upcoming clash between Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois. This potential bout would serve as a precursor to a trilogy showdown between Usyk and his arch-rival, Tyson Fury.

Wardley and Dubois are set to square off for the WBO heavyweight world championship on May 9 in Manchester. Both fighters have expressed their eagerness to step into the ring with Usyk, further intensifying the intrigue surrounding the heavyweight division.

In a twist of fate, sparring footage featuring Tyson Fury and Rico Verhoeven has resurfaced online, reigniting debates and drawing connections between past encounters and the current title narrative. The video showcases Verhoeven’s aggressive style against a then-pre-title Fury, offering a glimpse into the dynamic that might unfold in the upcoming “Glory of Giza” event.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits these monumental clashes, one thing remains certain: the heavyweight division is poised for a thrilling and unpredictable ride in the months to come.
