In a disappointing turn of events for boxing enthusiasts, Irish welterweight sensation Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (14-2, 11 KOs) has been forced to withdraw from his highly anticipated IBF World Welterweight Title Eliminator against Australia’s Liam Paro (26-1, 16 KOs), scheduled for January 16th. A severe illness has plagued Donovan, preventing him from training and sparring for over three weeks, ultimately leading to his withdrawal from the bout.

The victor of this 12-round eliminator was set to become the mandatory challenger for IBF Welterweight World Champion Lewis “The Croc” Crocker (22-0, 11 KOs). Donovan, who has previously engaged in two fiercely contested battles with Crocker in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been left heartbroken by this setback. Despite winning 18 of 20 rounds against Crocker in their past encounters, Donovan finds himself once again denied the opportunity to vie for the top spot.

“I’m utterly devastated to have to pull out of this fight,” Donovan expressed. “I was fully prepared and confident in my ability to defeat Paro. Unfortunately, missing three weeks of training due to illness left me with no choice. I sincerely apologize to all the fans in Australia who were eagerly awaiting this matchup. Rest assured, I will return stronger than ever in 2026. I wish Paro all the best and hope our paths cross in the ring in the future.”

Donovan’s coach and co-manager, Andy Lee, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of learning from past mistakes. “If we don’t learn from our mistakes, we’re doomed to repeat them,” Lee stated. “I’ve seen this situation unfold before with other boxers, and it never ends well. Given the viral chest and respiratory infection Paddy was battling, there was no way he could adequately prepare for this fight. I made the call to withdraw him, as his health and future in the sport are of paramount importance. Paddy remains one of the premier welterweights globally, with a bright future ahead.”

Donovan is expected to resume training shortly and aims to make his ring return by late March. This setback serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the importance of health and well-being for athletes.

As the boxing world looks ahead to 2026, fans can anticipate a thrilling year filled with high-stakes matches and unforgettable moments. Despite this unfortunate turn of events, the spirit of competition and the pursuit of greatness continue to drive the sport forward.
