Boxing Legend ‘El Maestro’ Miguel Canto Passes Away at 78

In a somber turn of events, the boxing world has lost one of its most revered figures. Miguel Canto Solis, affectionately known as ‘El Maestro,’ succumbed to a heart attack in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The former WBC World Flyweight Champion leaves behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of boxing history.

Canto’s professional career spanned from 1969 to 1982, during which he amassed an impressive record of 61 wins, 9 losses, and 4 draws, with 15 of those victories coming by way of knockout. His journey to the top was marked by perseverance and determination, qualities that endeared him to fans worldwide.

In August 1973, Canto made his first bid for the vacant WBC Flyweight title against Betulio Gonzalez in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Although he fell short by a majority 15-round decision, this setback only fueled his resolve. Two years later, in January 1975, Canto secured the WBC World Flyweight title in Sendai, Japan, with a majority 15-round decision, proving his mettle and cementing his place in boxing lore.

Canto’s reign as champion was nothing short of extraordinary. He participated in 16 consecutive WBC world flyweight title bouts, all of which went the distance. His record of 14 title defenses from 1975 to 1979 is a testament to his enduring skill and tenacity. Notably, 17 of his title bouts went the full 15 rounds, a feat that remains unparalleled in the modern era of boxing.

Despite facing setbacks, including a loss and a draw to Chan Hee Park in 1979, Canto’s spirit remained unbroken. He continued to fight with the same passion and dedication that had defined his career. However, after a series of knockout losses to Candido Tellez, Alfredo Hernandez, and Rodolfo Ortega in 1981 and 1982, Canto decided to hang up his gloves.

Canto’s contributions to the sport were duly recognized when he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998. A year later, he was honored as the flyweight fighter of the century, sharing this prestigious title with the legendary Pancho Villa.

Miguel Canto Solis, ‘El Maestro,’ will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements in the ring but also for the grace and humility he displayed throughout his life. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of boxers, ensuring that his name will forever be synonymous with greatness in the sport of boxing.
