In a thrilling turn of events, Ben Whittaker, Britain’s most electrifying boxing talent, is set to take center stage at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on Saturday, April 18. Whittaker will face Argentina’s formidable Braian Suarez in the main event, replacing the injured Callum Smith. This highly anticipated bout will be broadcast live worldwide, promising an evening of high-octane action.
Callum Smith, unfortunately, had to withdraw from his scheduled WBO Interim Light Heavyweight Championship fight against David Morrell due to an injury sustained during training. Stepping into the spotlight, Whittaker, known as ‘The Surgeon,’ will headline for only the third time in his career. His previous performance in Birmingham, where he spectacularly defeated Benjamin Gavazi in the first round, has set high expectations for this fight night.
Suarez, hailing from Buenos Aires, brings a formidable record to the ring with 20 knockouts from his 21 wins in 25 bouts. His last visit to the UK three years ago saw him competing for the IBO World Light Heavyweight Title against Lyndon Arthur. Suarez’s heavy-hitting style promises to bring an intense challenge to Whittaker, who is ranked No.3 by the WBC and No.5 by the IBF. A stellar performance by Whittaker could pave the way for his much-anticipated American debut.
‘Naturally, losing a mega fight so close to the event is a significant setback, and we wish Callum a speedy recovery,’ said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. ‘However, the show must go on, and it remains an unmissable night of boxing. Ben Whittaker is arguably one of the greatest showmen in the sport today, and he is box office in whatever city he fights in.’
Whittaker’s potential American debut looms large, and he will be eager to demonstrate why he is considered the future of the 175lbs division. Suarez, with his dangerous reputation and 20 stoppages on his record, will provide a solid test for Whittaker’s skills.
The evening will also feature local favorite ‘Meatball’ Molly McCann, who is sure to energize the crowd as she fights in her home city for the first time. McCann will face Wales’ Ashleigh Johnson in a Super Bantamweight bout. Additionally, Joe McGrail will battle Aaron Hayden for the Central Area Super Bantamweight belt, and young Heavyweight sensation Leo Atang will aim for his sixth consecutive stoppage victory.
‘Liverpool never disappoints for a Fight Night,’ Hearn added. ‘The atmosphere will be electric for Molly McCann, and we can look forward to another knockout performance from Leo Atang, the return of Joe McGrail, and more exciting talent from Merseyside. It will be a fantastic night of boxing.’
