In the glittering heart of Las Vegas, NV, at the Meta Apex, a new chapter in boxing history unfolded. The inaugural Zuffa Boxing event was headlined by the undefeated Callum Walsh, who made his middleweight debut against the seasoned Carlos Ocampo. The bout, though not a barnburner, provided enough intrigue to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Walsh, with an unblemished record of 16-0 and 11 KOs, extended his winning streak with a unanimous decision victory over Ocampo, whose record now stands at 38-4 with 26 KOs. The judges’ scorecards read 98-90 (twice) and 97-91, all in favor of the Irishman. Despite the victory, Walsh’s performance was far from stellar, with both fighters often standing at range, sizing each other up rather than engaging in heated exchanges.

Walsh did manage to connect with some clean, hard punches early on, but these were often thrown without much setup. Ocampo, on the other hand, struggled to close the distance and mount any significant offense. The most controversial moment of the fight came in the sixth round when Walsh was ruled knocked down after Ocampo landed a left hook to the body, causing Walsh’s glove to touch the canvas. The local commission reviewed the call and upheld the decision, much to the surprise of many.

Despite this setback, Walsh had little trouble with Ocampo for the remainder of the fight. Ocampo’s frustrations boiled over in the ninth round when he was deducted a point for a low blow. Walsh, though not particularly active, landed the more significant shots and cruised to a decision victory.

The undercard also provided some notable action. Misael Rodríguez improved to 16-0 with 8 KOs, securing a fourth-round technical knockout against Austin Deanda, who suffered his first loss. Julian Rodriguez, with a record of 25-1 and 15 KOs, won a unanimous decision against Cain Sandoval in a 10-round 145-lb catchweight clash. Omar Trinidad, remaining undefeated at 20-0-2 with 14 KOs, won via a tenth-round technical knockout against Max Ornelas, who suffered a shoulder dislocation.

While the main event may not have been the explosive showdown some had hoped for, it was a significant night for Zuffa Boxing and Callum Walsh. The Irishman’s middleweight debut was a success, albeit a controversial one, and the undercard provided plenty of excitement to keep the crowd entertained. As the dust settles on this inaugural event, one thing is clear: Zuffa Boxing has arrived, and it promises to bring more thrilling nights of boxing to the sport’s eager fans.
