In the realm of professional boxing, having a seasoned world champion in your corner is an invaluable asset, and Carlos Pereira is well aware of this advantage. As he gears up for his second professional bout on the Colm Murphy-headlined MHD card this weekend, Pereira acknowledges the profound impact of Irish boxing legend Eamon Loughran on his burgeoning career.
“Eamon’s presence is immense,” Pereira shared. “His wealth of experience and composed demeanor bring a lot to the table. He keeps me grounded and focused.” Loughran, a former world champion and one of Ireland’s most decorated fighters, offers Pereira something rare for a prospect at this stage: daily access to elite-level expertise in the gym.
“I hold immense respect for him,” Pereira added. “His guidance has been pivotal throughout my journey.” This guidance proved particularly crucial during Pereira’s professional debut earlier this year, a moment he describes as emotionally charged.
“It was a long-held dream,” he said. “Finally stepping into the ring as a professional was a special moment, filled with nerves, excitement, and everything in between.” However, once the bell rang, Pereira’s instincts took over. “Once the fight started, it was all about doing what I’ve trained to do,” he explained.
The debut bout also served as a significant learning experience. “I was glad to get the debut out of the way,” he said. “There were positives to take from it, but also areas I know I can improve on. Overall, it was an important learning experience.”
These lessons revolved around composure and control, qualities often associated with fighters benefiting from experienced mentorship. “I learned a lot about pacing, staying calm, and trusting myself more in the ring,” he added. “Every fight teaches you something, and I’ve taken those lessons into this training camp.”
The Portugal-born Belfast resident is set to face well-traveled journeyman Paul Cummings at Mosley Mills this Saturday. While Pereira is favored to secure victory, he knows there are no easy nights at the professional level.
“I’m expecting a tough fight,” he said. “At this level, there are no easy nights. I’ve trained hard and I’m ready to adapt if needed. My focus is on putting in a strong performance. If I do my job properly, the result will take care of itself.”
