In a night that echoed with the resonance of change, Jai Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs) showcased his prowess in the ring, securing a unanimous decision victory over Brandon Glanton (21-4, 18 KOs) at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas on March 8. The Australian boxer not only retained his Ring Magazine title but also clinched the inaugural Zuffa cruiserweight world title, marking a significant milestone in his career. The judges’ scorecards unanimously favored Opetaia, with a decisive 119-106 margin, underscoring his dominance throughout the bout.

Opetaia’s victory was a masterclass in strategic boxing. He began the fight with precision, picking his punches and controlling the pace. As the rounds progressed, Opetaia adapted his tactics, moving inside to land more frequent and powerful blows. Despite Glanton’s resilience, Opetaia’s superior technique and heavier punches prevailed. The fight was not without controversy, as the referee made questionable decisions, deducting points from both fighters for holding and low blows. However, these deductions did little to affect the ultimate outcome.

In the post-fight press conference, Dana White, the visionary behind Zuffa Boxing, made a bold proclamation that sent ripples through the boxing world. White, known for his ambitious and often controversial statements, declared his intention to sign the best fighters globally, regardless of their current affiliations. “I’m going to sign everybody that we think has the potential to be a world champion or is potentially the best in the world,” White asserted. When questioned about specific targets like Shakur Stevenson and Oleksandr Usyk, White’s response was unequivocal: “Do you consider him to be one of the best in the world? I’m going to f***ing sign everybody.”

White’s comments reflect his broader vision for Zuffa Boxing, which he envisions as a transformative force in the sport. He criticized the current state of boxing, labeling it as “rinky dink” and inept, and expressed his confidence in Zuffa’s ability to revolutionize the industry. “This sport is broken for a reason. Everybody is a bunch of rinky dink. I mean, it’s the most (expletive) rinky dink thing that I have ever seen in my life,” White remarked. He emphasized that Zuffa Boxing aims to provide fighters with unprecedented exposure and opportunities, positioning itself as a leader in the boxing world.

White also hinted at exciting announcements and plans for Zuffa Boxing, including expansion into key markets. His ambition is not just to sign top talent but to create a platform that elevates the sport to new heights. “We have some announcements coming out about Zuffa Boxing, and we will be traveling around and doing things this year,” White teased, leaving fans and analysts eagerly anticipating what lies ahead.

As Zuffa Boxing continues to make waves, the boxing community watches with bated breath. Dana White’s bold promises and ambitious plans could very well reshape the landscape of boxing, bringing a new era of excitement and competition to the sport.
