Bobbi Flood’s Strategic Shift: From Olympic Aspirations to Professional Boxing

From the moment he first stepped into the ring, Bobbi Flood’s sights were set on the Olympic Games. The Dublin native, like many of his Irish predecessors, dedicated himself to the amateur boxing system, believing it would pave the way to the sport’s most prestigious stage. Flood’s journey through various championships and trials seemed destined to culminate in Olympic glory, a dream he had nurtured since his early days in the sport.

“The Olympics were always my ultimate goal,” Flood shared in a recent interview. “It was the dream that fueled my passion for boxing from the very beginning.” However, as Flood’s career advanced, the landscape of amateur boxing underwent significant changes, ultimately altering his path.

The elimination of the 75kg weight class presented a significant challenge for Flood. The revised weight classes of 70kg and 80kg were not feasible options for the talented Cabra boxer. “Maintaining a weight of 70 kilos for an extended period was never a viable option for me,” Flood explained. “And jumping up to 80 kilos is a substantial increase, especially when competing against the world’s best.”

Flood emphasized the physical toll such a weight shift would entail: “We’re talking about adding ten kilos of muscle in a very short time. That kind of change can be detrimental to your body, particularly when you’re still developing as a fighter.” Rather than forcing his body into an unsuitable weight class, Flood made a strategic decision to transition to professional boxing.

“When the opportunity arose, it just made sense,” Flood stated. “I didn’t want to pursue something that wasn’t physically right for me. The professional route suited me better.” With the support of Anto Fitzpatrick and former world champion Sunny Edwards, Flood signed with Queensberry Promotions. His debut is set to take place on Frank Warren’s Patrick’s Weekend card at the 3Arena, a high-profile event broadcast on DAZN.

The 20-year-old is eager to showcase his skills on this prominent platform. “When I step into the ring, I’ll demonstrate my abilities,” Flood said. “The hard work I’ve put in—late nights, early mornings—that’s what people will see.” Flood is determined to make a strong impression and win over the audience.

“It’s about doing things the right way,” he added. “I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.” Flood also noted that his extensive sponsor base has enabled him to prepare thoroughly for his debut, setting the stage for a promising professional career.
