In a potential career-defining bout, British heavyweight Dave ‘The White Rhino’ Allen is gearing up for what could be his most challenging fight yet. After rebounding from a previous defeat with a first-round stoppage victory over Karim Berredjem earlier this month, Allen has set his sights on a thrilling clash with former WBO interim heavyweight champion, Zhilei Zhang.
Zhang, a seasoned veteran at 42, has not stepped into the ring since his sixth-round knockout loss to Agit Kabayel last February. However, his reputation precedes him, especially after his impressive stoppage of former heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder. Despite his recent inactivity, Zhang remains a formidable force, currently ranked third by the WBO, just behind world champion Fabio Wardley, who is set to defend his title against Daniel Dubois on May 9 in Manchester.
Allen, known for his fearless approach, expressed his enthusiasm for the potential matchup in a recent interview. ‘I think it’s going to be Zhilei Zhang,’ Allen stated confidently. ‘We’ve already spoken about it, and I’m happy to do it. I’ve never backed down from anyone in my life, and I ain’t going to start with him. I’m here to have a go and entertain everyone.’
The British heavyweight acknowledged the possible outcomes of the fight, stating, ‘If I box Zhilei Zhang, one of two things will happen. I’ll get flattened for the first time, or he’ll be knackered after three rounds, and I’ll beat him on points.’
Allen had previously been linked with a showdown against British heavyweight champion Jeamie TKV. However, TKV is reportedly set to defend his belt against Richard Riakporhe, potentially on the undercard of the highly anticipated Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov fight on April 11.
As Allen approaches what he admits should be his final year as a professional, he is hoping to make 2026 a memorable one. The 33-year-old aims to fight at least three times, culminating in a headline bout in September. ‘We’re hoping to have a busy year this year, hopefully my last year,’ Allen shared. ‘I spoke to [promoter] Eddie [Hearn], hopefully going to go again soon and then [on the] Dalton Smith [undercard in] June and then headline myself [in] September.’
With both fighters bringing their unique strengths and experiences to the table, a clash between Allen and Zhang promises to be a captivating spectacle for boxing enthusiasts worldwide.
