Teofimo Lopez Issues Stern Warning to Shakur Stevenson Ahead of High-Stakes Clash

In a recent interview, Teofimo Lopez, the WBO super lightweight world champion, issued a stark warning to his upcoming opponent, Shakur Stevenson. The two boxing titans are set to collide on January 31st at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lopez, known as ‘The Takeover,’ shared his thoughts on the dynamic between him and Stevenson, hinting at a long-standing rivalry that traces back to their days under the same promotional banner.

Lopez and Stevenson, once stablemates at Top Rank, have a history that adds an extra layer of intrigue to their impending bout. Lopez recalled past comments made by Stevenson, suggesting that Stevenson had always been favored due to his status as a 2016 USA silver medallist. “He talked about this and that and how I was jealous of him,” Lopez said. “No, you were a 2016 USA silver medallist, you were always going to get your signing bonus and all of that extra stuff.”

The champion admitted that he believes their paths were destined to cross in the ring, with both fighters seemingly on a collision course for years. “The thing was they were trying to secure him in a different route, whereas for me, I think I was just supposed to be an opponent eventually,” Lopez explained. “Now we are back, and this plan is against me absolutely.”

Lopez enters the fight with an impressive record, boasting just one loss against George Kambosos Jr in late 2021. Stevenson, on the other hand, steps up to super lightweight for the first time in his career, a move that Lopez believes was necessitated by a lack of competition in lower weight classes. “Shakur is stepping up because he has got nobody else to go after,” Lopez stated. “He is stepping up to prove a point. His big bro, aka Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, put in a huge upset and made a historic moment in time for the sport of boxing by beating Canelo Alvarez.”

Despite Stevenson’s Olympic pedigree and seemingly flawless career, Lopez claims to have identified weaknesses in the 28-year-old’s game. “My job is to show the true flaws that they cannot see, that the world cannot see,” Lopez asserted. “My job is to show the world that nobody can beat me, and I’m going to make it look pretty.”

Lopez’s confidence is bolstered by his recent shutout win against Arnold Barboza Jr in May of last year, where he dominated the challenger over 12 rounds. Stevenson, too, comes off an impressive victory against William Zepeda, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of boxing’s brightest stars.

As the fight night approaches, the anticipation builds. Lopez’s warning to Stevenson has added fuel to the fire, ensuring that all eyes will be on Madison Square Garden come January 31st. The clash between these two champions is not just a battle for the WBO super lightweight title, but a testament to their enduring rivalry and mutual quest for greatness.
