In a recent outburst, British heavyweight Dillian Whyte has voiced his disapproval of Tyson Fury’s selected opponent for his much-anticipated comeback fight. Whyte, who is expected to be ringside, will watch as his former rival Fury takes on Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11.
Fury, known as ‘The Gypsy King,’ is set to make his return to the ring after announcing his comeback following a brief retirement. The 37-year-old had previously hung up his gloves after suffering a second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024. However, Fury’s retirement was short-lived, as he made a comeback just eight months later to face Derek Chisora in a trilogy bout.
Whyte, never one to mince his words, has labeled Fury’s choice of opponent as ‘terrible.’ He believes that Makhmudov, who is coming off a unanimous decision win over Dave Allen in October, is not a worthy challenger for Fury. ‘Tyson Fury is smart,’ Whyte told reporters. ‘He fought Sefer Seferi and turned it into a big comeback fight. It’s the same old story. I think it’s terrible. Makhmudov is too slow. He’s going to get battered. Fury could come back at 60 and still beat Makhmudov.’
Whyte’s comments come as he prepares for his own return to the ring after a devastating first-round loss to Moses Itauma in August. Despite the setback, ‘The Body Snatcher’ remains optimistic about his future in the sport. He has expressed interest in a rematch against Anthony Joshua and has also named Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang as a potential future opponent.
‘I’ve always wanted to fight the best guys, and Zhang is definitely one of the best of my era,’ Whyte said. ‘So if he is available, then yes, I would like to get a good comeback fight, but if not, then I will jump straight back in again. In life, you win and you lose; that’s just part of life. A loss to me is nothing. I have been losing my whole life, and I have always come back. I would love to fight three times this year.’
As the boxing world eagerly awaits Fury’s comeback, Whyte’s criticism adds a layer of intrigue to the event. Will Fury prove his doubters wrong, or will Whyte’s predictions come to fruition? Only time will tell.
