As the boxing world gears up for a thrilling showdown, Eddie Hearn, the seasoned promoter, has forecasted a less-than-warm welcome for Conor Benn in his forthcoming bout against Regis Prograis. This highly anticipated match, scheduled for April 11 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, marks Benn’s first appearance since his surprising departure from Hearn’s Matchroom to ink a lucrative one-fight deal with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, rumored to be worth a staggering $15 million.
Hearn, who had staunchly supported the 29-year-old Benn through turbulent times, including two failed drug tests, revealed a rift between them following Benn’s decision to leave Matchroom. The promoter shared that Benn had refused to communicate with him, adding a layer of intrigue to their professional relationship.
Benn, aptly nicknamed ‘The Destroyer,’ is set to face former super lightweight world champion Regis Prograis on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s comeback fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov. This event, broadcast live on Netflix, sees Benn returning to the venue where he previously clashed with Chris Eubank Jr. in two memorable bouts. Benn emerged victorious in the second encounter last November, following a points loss in their first meeting in April.
Despite signing with Zuffa Boxing, Hearn speculates that Benn might not receive a hero’s welcome from the crowd, given their public fallout. “I think the public response will be interesting at Spurs when he walks out,” Hearn remarked. “Because I think he’ll get booed out of the stadium, to be honest. If he does, I’m a lot more popular than I thought I was.”
Benn’s previous bouts with Eubank Jr. were at middleweight, but his upcoming fight with Prograis will be at a catchweight of 150 pounds. Benn has expressed his ambition to secure a world title at welterweight, with WBC champion Ryan Garcia being a potential future opponent.
Prograis, on the other hand, is determined to disrupt Benn’s plans. The 37-year-old, who ended a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision victory over Jo Jo Diaz in August, is confident in his abilities. “I feel like I can beat Benn,” Prograis asserted. “Skill-wise, I’m better. He can be 180-200 pounds; it’s not going to matter. I know I got power, and I’m world-class level. I am 37 now, but I’m getting better, and I’m going to go out there and shine and have fun and do my thing.”
As the date approaches, the boxing community eagerly awaits this clash, which promises to be a compelling chapter in the careers of both fighters. The undercurrents of personal and professional dynamics add an extra layer of excitement to an already high-stakes bout.
