In a thrilling development for British boxing enthusiasts, Fabio Wardley, the reigning WBO heavyweight champion, is on the brink of finalizing his first title defense against a formidable domestic rival. Wardley, who hails from Ipswich, ascended to the pinnacle of the heavyweight division late last year under unusual circumstances. The belt was vacated by Oleksandr Usyk, who opted to sidestep the mandatory challenge posed by Wardley, thereby elevating the British boxer to full champion status.

Wardley’s journey to the top has been nothing short of remarkable. His 2025 campaign was particularly stellar, marked by a series of impressive victories that culminated in his coronation as the WBO heavyweight champion. The boxing world has been abuzz with speculation about Wardley’s first defense, and it now appears that an all-British clash is imminent.

Daniel Dubois, a formidable force in his own right, has emerged as the leading contender for this high-stakes bout. Dubois, who has not stepped into the ring since his fifth-round knockout loss to Usyk last July, has been vocal about his desire to face Wardley. Taking to social media, Dubois publicly challenged Wardley to “sign the contract,” signaling his eagerness to secure the fight.

Wardley’s manager, Mike Ofo, has confirmed that discussions are underway. “Fabio wanted to fight Oleksandr Usyk after beating Joseph Parker, but he chose to pursue Deontay Wilder instead,” Ofo stated. “As for Daniel Dubois, clearly that’s a fight that Fabio would be well up for.” This statement underscores Wardley’s readiness to take on Dubois, setting the stage for a captivating encounter.

The potential clash between Wardley and Dubois has garnered significant attention from the boxing community. Promoter Frank Warren has also weighed in on the matter, indicating that conversations with both camps are ongoing. “We’re talking to Fabio about various things and also to Daniel,” Warren revealed, hinting at the progress being made behind the scenes.

Wardley’s ascent to the WBO heavyweight title was met with some controversy, particularly Usyk’s decision to vacate the belt. Wardley himself described the situation as “strange,” but he has since embraced his new status and is eager to prove his mettle in the ring. A victory against Dubois would not only solidify Wardley’s position as a dominant force in the heavyweight division but also pave the way for potential unification bouts in the future.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits the official announcement, one thing is certain: an all-British heavyweight showdown between Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois promises to be a thrilling spectacle. With both fighters bringing their unique strengths and narratives to the ring, this bout has all the ingredients to become a classic encounter in the annals of British boxing history.
