Frank Warren Critiques Usyk’s Title Defense Against Kickboxing Star Verhoeven

In a recent statement, renowned boxing promoter Frank Warren expressed his disappointment with Oleksandr Usyk’s upcoming title defense. The Ukrainian heavyweight champion is set to face Rico Verhoeven, a kickboxing sensation with a mere 1-0 record in professional boxing, in May. Warren’s criticism stems from his belief that Usyk should be defending his WBC world title against a more seasoned and deserving contender.

Usyk, aged 39, has not stepped into the ring since his impressive fifth-round stoppage victory over Daniel Dubois in July. That victory solidified his status as a three-time, two-division undisputed champion. However, his choice of opponent for his next bout has raised eyebrows in the boxing community.

Frank Warren, however, has revealed plans that could see Usyk facing more formidable opponents in the near future. The promoter is open to the idea of Usyk fighting the winner of the upcoming clash between Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois. This bout, scheduled for May 9 in Manchester, will determine the WBO heavyweight world champion. Warren’s willingness to negotiate a unification bout between Usyk and the Wardley-Dubois winner adds an intriguing layer to the heavyweight landscape.

Adding to the narrative, Fabio Wardley has publicly stated his ambition to face both Usyk and Tyson Fury, should he emerge victorious against Dubois. This bold declaration sets the stage for a potential showdown with Usyk, further fueling the anticipation among boxing enthusiasts.

Rico Verhoeven, despite his limited experience in professional boxing, brings a wealth of combat sports expertise to the table. As the long-reigning GLORY heavyweight kickboxing champion, Verhoeven has successfully defended his title multiple times since 2015. His background in kickboxing adds a unique dimension to this bout, making it an intriguing if unconventional matchup for Usyk.

If Usyk were to secure a victory against Verhoeven, he would etch his name in the history books alongside Muhammad Ali. Usyk aims to become the first heavyweight champion since Ali to defend the lineal title on three continents. Ali’s legendary career saw him defend his title across the United States, Europe, and Asia. A successful defense by Usyk in North America would tie Ali’s record for lineal heavyweight title fights on four continents, further cementing Usyk’s legacy in the sport.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits the outcome of these high-stakes matchups, one thing is certain: the heavyweight division is poised for a thrilling and unpredictable ride in the months ahead.
