On a fateful night at the Chicago Coliseum, March 25, 1929, a welterweight championship bout between two rising stars, Jackie Fields and Young Jack Thompson, took an unexpected turn. As the two fighters battled it out in the ring, a violent panic erupted among the spectators, forcing the boxers to seek refuge beneath the canvas.

The National Boxing Association had stripped Joe Dundee of his title due to his failure to schedule a defense within the required timeframe. This set the stage for Fields and Thompson to vie for the vacant welterweight championship. The New York State Athletic Commission, however, was still considering giving Dundee an extension.

Young Jack Thompson had become an overnight sensation after his stunning second-round TKO victory over Dundee in a non-title bout on August 30, 1928. With over eighty professional fights under his belt, Thompson was a formidable opponent. Jackie Fields, on the other hand, had risen to prominence nearly five years after winning Olympic gold as a featherweight in 1924. At just 21 years old, Fields had established himself as a top contender with impressive victories over Thompson, Sergeant Sammy Baker, and Baby Joe Gans.

Promoter Jim Mullen promised a $5,000 diamond-encrusted belt to the winner, billing Fields as “Greater than Benny Leonard” and Thompson as the “Colored Wonder who knocked out Dundee.” Fields entered the ring as the betting favorite, thanks to his victory over Thompson six months earlier.

The fight began with Fields controlling the first five rounds with his jab, showcasing his slick boxing skills and educated left hand. However, as the rounds progressed, Fields began to tire, and Thompson found his mark with powerful right crosses. By the eighth round, Thompson was going for broke, but Fields regained his second wind.

Then, chaos ensued. A spectator in section Q shouted a racist remark at Thompson, sparking a heated exchange between fans. One of Thompson’s supporters, Kenneth Taylor, pulled out a gun, and his friend reached for a knife. The situation escalated rapidly, with fans bolting and knocking over chairs, creating a deafening roar that made it seem as if the Coliseum was crumbling. The fight was abruptly halted, and the boxers were forced to take cover beneath the ring.

This historic night will forever be remembered not for the boxing prowess displayed by Fields and Thompson, but for the chaos that overshadowed their championship bout. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the tensions that can arise in the heat of the moment, even in the world of sports.
