In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Irish boxers Daina Moorehouse and Dean Clancy have secured their spots in the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Cup in Brazil, putting them just one win away from a coveted medal. Their performances have been nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the best of Irish boxing talent on the global stage.

Daina Moorehouse, hailing from Wicklow, triumphed in her 51kg category with a hard-fought split decision victory over Poland’s Natalia Kuczewska. The scores were tightly contested, with Moorehouse emerging victorious with a 4-1 split. The judges’ scorecards read 29:28, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, and 28:29, reflecting the intense battle in the ring. Moorehouse, a Paris Olympian, shared her thoughts after the match, stating, “It took me a while to find my rhythm, but I stayed patient and trusted the process. I’m ready to come back stronger each day.”

Dean Clancy, representing Sligo, also advanced to the last eight in the 65kg category. Clancy faced off against Mexico’s Hugo Barron and secured a split decision win. The judges’ scores were 28:28, 26:30, 27:29, 29:27, and 28:27, with a point deduction for Clancy. Reflecting on his performance, Clancy said, “The first round was a bit challenging as I tried to find my range. I knew I was down, but I didn’t panic. I came back strongly in the second and third rounds.” Despite a point deduction in the second round, Clancy’s experience and composure saw him through to victory.

Unfortunately, the journey ended for Jenny Lehane and Patsy Joyce in the quarter-finals. Lehane put up a valiant effort against Serbia’s Sara Cirkovic but lost with a unanimous decision. The judges’ scores were 28:29, 28:29, 27:30, 28:29, and 27:30. Joyce, from Westmeath, also faced a tough opponent in Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov, losing with a unanimous decision and two point deductions. The scores were 29:25, 29:25, 29:25, 29:26, and 29:25.

The Irish team, comprising ten talented boxers, includes six Olympians: Daina Moorehouse, Jenny Lehane, Michaela Walsh, Jude Gallagher, Dean Clancy, and Jack Marley. The team also features 2025 World bronze medalist Patsy Joyce and multiple European U23 medalist Louis Rooney. These athletes represent clubs from across Ireland, including Belfast, Dublin, Leitrim, Louth, Tyrone, Westmeath, and Wicklow.

As Moorehouse and Clancy prepare for their upcoming bouts, the entire nation stands behind them, eager to witness more stellar performances and celebrate their potential medal victories. Their journey thus far has been a testament to their skill, resilience, and the bright future of Irish boxing.
