In the realm of professional boxing, few moments are as pivotal as a fighter’s first serious title contention. For Hijjah McMahon, that moment is nigh. The Belfast native is poised to make a significant leap in his career as he prepares to fight for the vacant BUI Celtic welterweight title this Friday in Scotland.

McMahon, a former semi-professional boxer, has never shied away from challenges. His upcoming bout against the undefeated Scot, Jack Richardson, is a testament to his unwavering confidence and determination. “I’m expecting a tough fighter who’s game and coming to win. It’s in his backyard, but that won’t be enough for him to beat me,” McMahon asserted, his words echoing with a fighter’s resolve.

At just 25 years old, McMahon is stepping into the ring for a title fight relatively early in his professional career. However, his journey to this point has been anything but smooth. “It would mean a lot if I’m honest,” McMahon shared, reflecting on the hurdles he’s had to overcome. “I have had to jump over many hurdles to even get here, and on Friday, I get to show why I work like I do. I get to prove a few people wrong and, more importantly, prove my people and myself right.”

Despite the early nature of the fight, McMahon did not hesitate to accept the challenge. “Two days after my last fight, Jay Byrne phoned me and told me what was offered. I took a night with Dee [Walsh], discussed it, and we happily accepted it,” he recounted. McMahon is trained by Dee Walsh and managed by Byrne, who himself has a storied history with the Celtic title, having won it in 2017.

While Byrne’s past successes in Scotland might inspire some, McMahon is focused on carving his own path. “I know Jay went there and won a title, and that he won this exact belt I’m about to win, but I’m just focused on me. I don’t really look too much into that,” McMahon stated, his eyes firmly set on the prize.

As the fight night approaches, McMahon’s confidence is palpable. He predicts a dominant performance, one that will showcase a new level in his boxing prowess. “I’m going to show a new level in this one,” he declared, his words a promise of the fireworks to come.

For McMahon, this fight is more than just a title bout; it’s a chance to elevate himself to champion status, to prove his mettle, and to silence any doubters. It’s a moment that could define his career, and he’s ready to seize it with both hands.
