In a dramatic turn of events, the boxing world witnessed a series of unexpected developments leading up to the highly anticipated match at Madison Square Garden. The scheduled WBC middleweight title defense by Carlos Adames was abruptly cancelled due to the champion’s hospitalization from severe dehydration, a result of his strenuous weight-cutting efforts. Adames, who was significantly overweight at 180 pounds, found himself approximately 20 pounds over the limit for his bout against Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams.

Adames, hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, by way of the Dominican Republic, boasts an impressive record of 24-1-1 with 18 knockouts. His last fight, a 12-round draw with Hamzah Sheeraz in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February 2025, left fans eager for his next appearance. However, his recent health scare has left his future in the ring uncertain, and the WBC has yet to announce whether Adames will retain his title.

In a swift rearrangement, Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams, ranked ninth in the world among middleweights on BoxRec with a record of 19-1 and 13 knockouts, will now face Wendy Toussaint in a 10-round bout. Toussaint, the International Boxing Federation USBA Super Welterweight champion, brings a record of 17-3 with seven knockouts to the ring. This fight marks Toussaint’s debut in the middleweight category, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup.

Toussaint, originally from Haiti and now based in Huntington, New York, has a reputation for taking on formidable opponents. Notably, three of his last five adversaries had a combined record of 38-0 at the time he fought them. This bout promises to be a thrilling encounter, as both fighters bring their unique strengths and experiences to the ring.

The cancellation of Adames’ title defense and the subsequent arrangement of Williams vs. Toussaint highlight the unpredictable nature of boxing. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching the developments surrounding Adames’ health and the outcome of the newly scheduled bout. The WBC’s decision regarding Adames’ title status remains a topic of keen interest, adding to the anticipation and speculation within the boxing community.

As the boxing world awaits further updates, the focus shifts to the upcoming clash between Williams and Toussaint. This matchup, born out of unforeseen circumstances, has the potential to deliver an exciting and memorable night of boxing at Madison Square Garden.
