In a display of sheer boxing intelligence, Jose Valenzuela made a triumphant return to the ring after nearly a year-long hiatus, outclassing Diego Torres in a tactical masterclass. The lightweight bout, which headlined Zuffa Boxing 02 at the Meta APEX, saw Valenzuela leverage his experience to nullify Torres’ aggressive pursuit of a 20th career knockout.

Valenzuela, a former WBA junior welterweight titleholder, was under pressure to perform after his previous loss. Stepping back down to lightweight, he seemed rejuvenated, his movements sharp and his defense impenetrable. “I feel like myself,” Valenzuela stated, his confidence evident in his performance.

The bout was a strategic chess match, with Valenzuela using his jab to keep Torres at bay and setting up combinations that consistently found their mark. Torres, known for his relentless pressure and power, struggled to find his rhythm against Valenzuela’s elusive defense and precise counter-punching.

Valenzuela’s victory sets the stage for a potential rematch with Edwin De Los Santos, who recently signed with Zuffa Boxing. Their previous encounter in September 2022 was a thrilling back-and-forth battle that ended in a third-round knockout victory for De Los Santos. “First things first, I’ve got to take care of business and give my opponent his respect, because he’s coming to fight,” Valenzuela said, acknowledging Torres’ prowess.

Torres, despite the loss, remains a formidable force in the lightweight division. His Mexican fighting style, characterized by relentless pressure and power punches, has earned him a loyal fanbase. “For me, it’s a great fight, and that’s what I know I have to give them,” Torres said, his respect for Valenzuela evident.

The co-main event saw Serhii Bohachuk, The Ring’s No. 10-rated junior middleweight contender, in action. Bohachuk, coming off a wide decision defeat in his Brandon Adams rematch, was looking to bounce back. The card also featured several other intriguing matchups, including a light heavyweight bout between Radivoje Kalajdzic and Oleksandr Gvozdyk, and a middleweight clash between Jalil Hackett and Roberto Cruz.

Valenzuela’s victory is a testament to his skill and experience. As he sets his sights on a rematch with De Los Santos, the lightweight division is heating up, promising more thrilling encounters in the future.
