The welterweight division is undergoing a remarkable transformation. With Terence Crawford’s undisputed championship reign now a part of history and Jaron Ennis’ ascent to higher weight classes, the stage is set for a new generation of talent. Currently, Mario Barrios, Lewis Crocker, Rolando Romero, and Devin Haney hold world titles in the men’s division, while Lauren Price and Mikaela Mayer dominate the women’s ranks. As we look ahead to 2026, the division is brimming with promising contenders ready to make their mark. Here are five welterweight boxers to watch closely in the coming year.

    Delante ‘Tiger’ Johnson

Delante Johnson, boasting an unblemished record of 17-0 with 8 KOs, represented the United States at the Tokyo Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to eventual gold medalist Roniel Iglesias. Since signing with Top Rank in 2021, Johnson has primarily competed near the super lightweight limit. However, in 2025, he made a successful transition to welterweight, securing three victories. Now ranked in the top 15 by both the IBF and WBO, 2026 could be the year Johnson truly breaks out.

    Rohan Polanco

Rohan Polanco, with a perfect record of 17-0 and 10 KOs, represented the Dominican Republic at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite an early exit, Polanco has since made significant strides in the professional ranks, signing with Top Rank in 2022. Currently ranked in the top 15 by the IBF, WBC, and WBO, Polanco was set to fight on the Xander Zayas-Abass Baraou undercard but had to withdraw due to illness. If he can maintain his health, 2026 could be a pivotal year for him.

    Sora Tanaka

Sora Tanaka, a 24-year-old Japanese sensation, has quickly made a name for himself in the boxing world. Turning professional in the summer of 2024, Tanaka has amassed a record of 5-0 with 5 KOs and became the OPBF welterweight champion in less than a year. Although he has yet to be ranked by the major sanctioning bodies, his impressive performances suggest that recognition may not be far off. Keep an eye on Tanaka as he continues to rise in 2026.

    David Whitmire

David Whitmire, the youngest on this list, has already made waves in 2026 with an undefeated record of 11-0 and 8 KOs. Beginning his professional career in 2023 at just 17 years old, Whitmire has quickly gained attention, appearing on ProBox undercards and the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr. card. As he continues to develop, Whitmire is poised for a breakthrough year.

    Christopher Guerrero

Christopher Guerrero, with a record of 16-0 and 9 KOs, brings a unique background to the welterweight division. Born in México but raised in Canada, Guerrero began his professional career in 2021 with Eye of the Tiger Management. As he continues to hone his skills, Guerrero is another young talent to watch in 2026.

The welterweight division is on the cusp of an exciting era, with these five boxers leading the charge. Their journeys promise to bring thrilling action and unforgettable moments to the sport of boxing.
