Shakur Stevenson’s WBC Title Stripped: A Controversial Decision or Just Business?

In a recent turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, Shakur Stevenson was stripped of his WBC lightweight title. This decision came merely days after his impressive victory over Teofimo Lopez, where he claimed the WBO junior welterweight title. The timing of this move has raised eyebrows and sparked a heated debate about the motivations behind it.

Stevenson’s dominance in the ring is undeniable. With a flawless record of 25 wins, including 11 knockouts, he has proven himself to be a formidable force in the lightweight division. His recent victory over Lopez at Madison Square Garden was a testament to his skill and determination, further solidifying his status as a top-tier boxer.

The WBC’s decision to strip Stevenson of his title stems from his refusal to pay a $100,000 sanctioning fee. Stevenson, never one to mince words, took to social media to express his frustration, calling the WBC ‘crooks’ and questioning the legitimacy of their demands. He suggested that the organization’s issue with Terence Crawford, whom they stripped of his title in December, was being taken out on him.

‘Why should I pay $100,000 to an organization that had nothing to do with my fight?’ Stevenson questioned. His defiance is palpable, and his words echo the sentiments of many who question the practices of sanctioning bodies in boxing. The WBC’s decision has left many wondering if this is a case of a sanctioning body flexing its muscles or a legitimate business move.

Stevenson’s future in the lightweight division is now uncertain. With no title to defend, it seems he may be moving up to the junior welterweight division permanently. This could potentially set the stage for more exciting matchups in the future, but it also leaves a void in the lightweight division that will need to be filled.

The controversy surrounding Stevenson’s title stripping highlights the often-contentious relationship between boxers and sanctioning bodies. As fans, we can only hope that this situation is resolved in a manner that is fair to all parties involved and that the focus remains on the sport we all love: boxing.

In the meantime, Stevenson’s impressive performance against Lopez serves as a reminder of his skill and potential. Regardless of the politics surrounding his title, one thing is clear: Shakur Stevenson is a force to be reckoned with in the ring.
