The curtain has fallen on the third edition of The Hundred, leaving us with a treasure trove of unforgettable moments, stellar performances, and heart-stopping finishes. As we bid adieu to the 2023 tournament, it’s time to reflect on the cricketers who shone the brightest and the matches that kept us on the edge of our seats.

One of the most remarkable feats came from Jos Buttler, who etched his name in the history books with his 402nd appearance for England, surpassing James Anderson’s record. Buttler’s experience and skill were on full display as he led England to a series-clinching victory against Sri Lanka. His composed innings of 39 off 29 balls, including six boundaries, was instrumental in England’s successful chase of a revised target in a rain-affected match. This victory not only showcased Buttler’s prowess but also highlighted the depth and resilience of the English side.

The partnership between Tom Banton and Harry Brook was another highlight of the series. Banton’s unbeaten 54 and Brook’s 36 were crucial in steering England to a six-wicket win. Their ability to handle pressure and deliver when it mattered most was a testament to their growing stature in international cricket. The series also saw Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid making significant contributions with the ball, further emphasizing the all-round strength of the English team.

In the ODI series, Joe Root and Harry Brook were the stars of the show. Root’s calm and composed century, his 20th in ODIs, set the stage for Brook’s explosive innings. Brook’s unbeaten 136, achieved in just 57 balls, was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Their partnership of 191 runs propelled England to a commanding total of 357-3, their highest ODI score in Sri Lanka. This victory not only sealed the series but also marked England’s first away ODI series win in almost three years.

Root’s consistency and Brook’s aggression formed a perfect blend that Sri Lanka struggled to counter. Despite a valiant effort from Pavan Rathnayake, who scored a maiden international hundred, Sri Lanka fell short of the target. The series win was a much-needed boost for England, easing some of the pressure that had been building up due to their recent ODI form.

As we look back on The Hundred and the subsequent series against Sri Lanka, it’s clear that English cricket is in a strong position. The performances of Buttler, Root, and Brook, among others, have not only entertained fans but also set the stage for future successes. With the World Cup on the horizon, England’s cricketers have shown that they have the skill, determination, and team spirit to compete at the highest level.
