Nearly three months have passed since Tom Aspinall’s heavyweight title bout against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi. The fight, which headlined the event at Etihad Arena, ended abruptly in the first round when Gane accidentally poked Aspinall in both eyes, leaving the champion unable to see and continue.
The bout was ruled a no contest, allowing Aspinall to retain his title, but the aftermath has been far from straightforward. The 32-year-old Brit has been dealing with impaired vision, requiring surgery and leaving him unable to train. Aspinall described the recovery process as ‘a nightmare,’ highlighting the unique challenges of eye injuries.
‘Been a bit of a long process because with eyes, unlike other injuries, they just fix them straight away. With eyes, they try and let them, because it’s obviously risky, try to let them heal naturally,’ Aspinall explained.
