In a devastating turn of events, former World Heavyweight Champion Anthony ‘AJ’ Joshua, aged 36, was involved in a fatal SUV crash on December 29, 2025, along the bustling Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria. The incident, which occurred around 11 a.m. local time, resulted in the tragic loss of two of Joshua’s close associates and left the boxing champion with minor injuries.

Joshua, who was in the back seat of a black Lexus SUV, had just celebrated a victory over Jake Paul and was looking forward to a potential super bout with Tyson Fury in 2026. The vehicle, traveling at high speed, reportedly blew a tire and lost control during an overtaking maneuver, crashing into a stationary truck parked by the side of the road. The impact was fatal for the driver and another passenger, identified as Joshua’s childhood friend Kevin Latif Ayodele and his strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami, who were seated in the front.

The Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) shared images of the wrecked vehicle, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers. According to FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speed and the tire blowout were the primary causes of the accident. Joshua, who has strong family ties in Ogun, was hospitalized in stable condition at a specialized facility in Lagos, with his security detail following in a separate vehicle unharmed.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally reached out to Joshua and his mother, Yeta Odusanya, to express his condolences and assure them of the best possible care. Tinubu stated, “I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my sincere condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital. I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call.”

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over Joshua’s planned comeback and the highly anticipated bout with Tyson Fury. The boxing community and fans worldwide are left in shock and mourning, as they await further updates on Joshua’s recovery and the ongoing investigations into the accident.

As the world watches and waits, the thoughts and prayers of many are with Anthony Joshua, his family, and the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic event. The resilience and strength that Joshua has shown in the ring will undoubtedly be tested as he faces this personal tragedy.
