In a somber turn of events, the driver implicated in the tragic car accident that resulted in the deaths of two close associates of renowned boxer Anthony Joshua has been formally charged. The incident, which also left Joshua with minor injuries, has sent shockwaves through the sporting community.
The driver, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, faced a Magistrates Court in Ogun State, Nigeria, where he was charged with multiple offenses. The charges include death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s license. The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, a route that has seen its share of tragic incidents.
Anthony Joshua, the 36-year-old two-time heavyweight champion, had been traveling in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck. The crash resulted in the untimely deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, both of whom were integral members of Joshua’s team. Joshua himself sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve, following his victory over Jake Paul in December.
Kayode, aged 46, was granted bail set at 5,000,000 Naira (approximately £2,578) and was remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail requirements. The case has been adjourned until January 20, leaving many awaiting further developments.
The boxing community has rallied around Joshua during this difficult time, with tributes pouring in for Ayodele and Ghami. Tyson Fury, a longtime rival of Joshua, expressed his condolences, stating, ‘This is so sad. May God give them a good bed in heaven. There is no tomorrow. Live, love, and give.’
Eddie Hearn, Chairman of Matchroom Boxing, Joshua’s promotional team, also paid heartfelt tributes to the deceased. Hearn’s emotional posts on social media highlighted the significant roles Ayodele and Ghami played in Joshua’s career and personal life. ‘With the heaviest of hearts, we mourn the loss of two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. Your energy and loyalty will be deeply missed,’ Hearn wrote.
As the boxing world comes to terms with this tragedy, the focus remains on supporting Anthony Joshua and the families of those who lost their lives. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety.
