Vergil Ortiz’s Legal Battle: A Déjà Vu of Canelo’s Golden Boy Split

In a striking echo of history, rising star Vergil Ortiz has taken a bold step, mirroring the path once trodden by the legendary Canelo Alvarez. The undefeated junior middleweight contender has initiated legal proceedings against his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, and Golden Boy Promotions, seeking to terminate their contractual agreement. This move is reminiscent of Alvarez’s successful departure from Golden Boy five years ago, a fact not lost on those following the sport closely.

Ortiz has enlisted the services of the same law firm and attorney that represented Alvarez in his high-profile case. The Mexican superstar had filed a $280 million lawsuit in California Federal Court in 2020, which ultimately resulted in De La Hoya being held responsible for fulfilling Alvarez’s contractual obligations. This precedent has seemingly emboldened Ortiz to challenge his promotional ties.

The catalyst for Ortiz’s decision appears to be the disruption of a planned late March bout with fellow undefeated American Jaron “Boots” Ennis, a former unified welterweight champion. The fight was intended to headline a collaborative event between Golden Boy and Matchroom Boxing, likely in Las Vegas. Ortiz’s lawsuit alleges that De La Hoya interfered with the agreed terms for the Ennis fight, driven by a desire to renegotiate financial arrangements with DAZN and Matchroom.

The lawsuit, filed in Nevada, paints a vivid picture of the tensions between Ortiz and De La Hoya. It highlights De La Hoya’s history of substance abuse and his contentious relationships within the boxing community, including public outbursts on social media. The filing argues that these behaviors necessitate protective measures for Ortiz, as outlined in their Promotional Rights Agreement (PRA). Specifically, the PRA includes provisions requiring Golden Boy to negotiate in good faith with other promoters and to fully disclose any offers, ensuring Ortiz’s representatives can directly engage in negotiations.

According to the lawsuit, a December 2025 meeting between Golden Boy and Ortiz’s representatives saw Golden Boy present an offer for the Ennis bout. However, the offer allegedly failed to meet the PRA’s requirement of providing at least three potential opponents for Ortiz to consider. This breach of contract, among other grievances, forms the crux of Ortiz’s legal challenge.

As the boxing world watches this drama unfold, the parallels to Canelo Alvarez’s departure from Golden Boy are striking. The outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications for Ortiz’s career and the broader landscape of boxing promotions. One thing is certain: the sport’s fans and analysts will be keenly observing every development in this high-stakes saga.
