In a surprising turn of events, the World Boxing Council has given the nod to a potential showdown between heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and former titleholder Deontay Wilder. The announcement, made by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, has set the boxing world abuzz with anticipation.

The reigning champion, Usyk, has expressed his desire for a voluntary title defense later this year, with the mega bout slated to take place on American soil. Usyk, who last fought in the United States in 2019, seems eager to return to the ring in front of American fans.

Wilder, currently ranked 13th among heavyweight contenders, has been approved as a potential challenger. The 40-year-old Alabama native, known for his explosive power, is coming off a impressive victory against Tyrrell Herndon in June 2025. With a record of 44-4-1 and 43 knockouts, Wilder’s career has seen its share of ups and downs, but his recent win has reignited hopes of a comeback.

Usyk, the undisputed champion holding the IBF, WBC, WBA, and lineal titles, has relinquished the WBO title, now held by Fabio Wardley. The Ukrainian southpaw, with a perfect record of 24-0 and 15 knockouts, is widely regarded as one of the most skilled boxers in the heavyweight division.

Wilder, reflecting on his potential matchup with Usyk, expressed confidence in his abilities. “I believe my right hand will be the key to victory,” Wilder stated. “I possess the speed, height, and athleticism that give me a distinct advantage.”

The prospect of a Usyk-Wilder bout has drawn comparisons to the iconic Rocky movie, where an underdog gets a shot at the title. After a series of setbacks, including losses to Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker, and Zhilei Zhang, Wilder’s career seemed to be on the decline. However, his recent victory has breathed new life into his boxing journey, and a fight against Usyk could be the ultimate test of his resurgence.

Formal negotiations are now underway, and if successful, this bout could be one of the most anticipated heavyweight clashes in recent memory. Both fighters bring a unique set of skills and a wealth of experience to the ring, promising an electrifying showdown for boxing enthusiasts worldwide.
