The boxing world was taken aback when an unexpected rivalry ignited in November 1972. The shock stemmed from the fact that Roberto Duran, a force to be reckoned with in the lightweight division, suffered a defeat to an opponent considered merely a ‘tune-up’. Just months after solidifying his status as the world’s premier lightweight with a dominant victory over Ken Buchanan, Duran, nicknamed ‘Hands of Stone’, faced Esteban De Jesus from Puerto Rico in a non-title bout at Madison Square Garden. This was supposed to be another swift triumph and an opportunity for Duran to showcase his talents to the New York crowd. However, De Jesus had other plans.

De Jesus, a clever and crafty boxer with a formidable left hook, proved he was far from an easy opponent. He knocked Duran down with a powerful left hook in the opening seconds and went on to secure a clear points victory. The Puerto Rican’s fans celebrated as if he had won a title, lifting him onto their shoulders and parading him through the stands of the iconic Garden.

Following their initial encounter, both fighters embarked on impressive winning streaks. De Jesus secured seven victories in 1973, while Duran achieved ten, including three successful title defenses. The stage was set for a rematch, with Duran seeking revenge. This time, the fight took place in Duran’s hometown of Panama City, with his title belt on the line.

Before the rematch, legendary trainer Ray Arcel advised Duran on how to approach De Jesus. Arcel cautioned Duran against rushing in for a quick knockout, urging him to stick and move until given the signal. However, Duran disregarded this advice in the opening round and was knocked down again by De Jesus’ left hook. After that, Duran boxed with controlled aggression, leading to intense exchanges in the third round where Duran landed devastating blows.

The trilogy reached its climax on January 21, 1978, in a bout that would cement both fighters’ legacies. The third fight was a testament to their skill, determination, and the fierce rivalry that had developed between them. The epic encounters between Duran and De Jesus would be remembered as some of the most thrilling in boxing history, showcasing the best of the lightweight division.
