On a frosty evening in the heart of New York City, the stage was set for a boxing spectacle that would etch itself into the annals of the sport’s history. Benny Leonard, known as the ‘Ghetto Wizard,’ and Richie Mitchell stepped into the ring for a rematch that would exceed all expectations, delivering one of the most electrifying opening rounds ever witnessed.

Their first encounter in 1917 had seen Leonard emerge victorious, stopping Mitchell in the seventh round. Since then, both fighters had been on impressive winning streaks. Mitchell had secured around thirty victories, with his only blemish being a newspaper decision loss to the formidable Lew Tendler. Leonard, however, had been on an even more remarkable run, defeating the likes of Johnny Kilbane, Jack Britton, Willie Ritchie, and Johnny Dundee.

As the fighters prepared for the bout, confidence radiated from Leonard. When a prominent figure in the underworld, known for his high-stakes gambling, wagered a substantial sum on Leonard achieving a first-round knockout, the champion agreed to deliver, enticed by the promise of a share in the winnings.

The bell rang, and Leonard, wielding his lethal right hand, swiftly took control. Less than a minute in, he sent Mitchell to the canvas with a well-placed right. The challenger rose at the count of nine, clinging to Leonard in an attempt to recover. Leonard, however, was not to be denied. He disentangled himself and sent Mitchell down again with a left hook. As Mitchell beat the count a second time, Leonard moved in for the finish, landing a one-two to the chin that put Mitchell down for the third time.

However, the referee allowed the fight to continue, and Mitchell, displaying incredible resilience, rose to his feet once more. With a minute left in the round, Leonard, showing signs of fatigue, found himself on the receiving end of a sudden and unexpected onslaught from Mitchell. The challenger charged, landing a left to the body followed by a devastating right to the jaw that sent Leonard to the canvas.

The crowd erupted as the seemingly invincible Leonard found himself on the ropes. At the count of seven, a dazed Leonard climbed to his feet, blood trickling from his mouth, his eyes glazed over. His corner shouted instructions, urging him to box, but Leonard, in a move that shocked everyone, stood flat-footed, scowling at Mitchell and beckoning him to come and fight.

The gesture left Mitchell hesitant, fearing a trap. Instead of pressing his advantage, he kept his distance, allowing the seconds to tick away. The round ended with both fighters still standing, setting the stage for a thrilling continuation of their epic showdown.

This night in New York City would be remembered not just for the cold, but for the heat generated by two warriors who gave their all in the ring, delivering a performance that would be talked about for generations to come.
