In the wake of unimaginable tragedy, Anthony Joshua’s boxing career has been put on indefinite hold. The former heavyweight champion is grappling with the heart-wrenching loss of two close friends and team members, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, who tragically perished in a car accident in Nigeria last month. Joshua himself sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized for two days following the incident, which occurred merely ten days after his triumphant sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s longtime promoter, has made it clear that there will be no discussions about Joshua’s future in the ring for the foreseeable future. Speaking with a heavy heart, Hearn emphasized the need for respect, time, and privacy for Joshua as he navigates through this profound loss. “At the moment, Anthony needs time. Time and privacy,” Hearn stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the emotional toll it has taken on the champion.

Joshua was present at the funerals of Ayodele and Ghami in London, a testament to his deep bond with the departed. The tragedy has left Joshua in a state of disbelief, as revealed in a recent social media conversation with former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. “It still hasn’t hit me yet,” Joshua admitted, reflecting on the fragility of life. “Life is short, man, life is short.”

The boxing world had been eagerly anticipating a showdown between Joshua and Tyson Fury later this year. However, given the current circumstances, all such plans have been put on hold. Fury, who is set to make his return to the ring this year after a brief retirement, has hinted at an April comeback. His manager, Spencer Brown, has mentioned Arslanbek Makhumdov as a potential opponent for “The Gypsy King,” who last fought in December 2024.

As the boxing community rallies around Joshua, it is crucial to respect his need for solitude and healing. The road ahead for Joshua is uncertain, but one thing is clear: he must be given the space and time to grieve and recover. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Anthony Joshua and the families affected by this tragic incident.
