In a significant career shift, Brian Norman Jr. has decided to part ways with his long-time trainer and father, Brian Norman Sr., following his first professional loss. The 25-year-old boxing sensation was dethroned as the WBO welterweight world champion in November, succumbing to a unanimous decision against Devin Haney in Riyadh. This defeat marked a turning point for Norman Jr., prompting him to explore new avenues in his training regimen.
Norman Jr., who was elevated to full WBO champion status in August 2024, revealed his decision to seek a new lead trainer in an exclusive interview. “My father is no longer my head trainer at the moment,” Norman Jr. stated. “I have been looking at other options. I knew some things had to get shaken up a little bit. I just had to move in different directions, that’s all.”
The Georgia native acknowledged the complexity of his decision, balancing respect for his father’s guidance with his own ambitions. “Yes and no,” he responded when asked about the difficulty of leaving his father’s tutelage. “Yes, because that’s my pops. But no, because I’m a man. I like winning. I need to go out here and win. Whatever I feel like I need to do, I’m going to go out there and do it.”
Norman Jr. emphasized that his father would still be involved in his career, just not as the head trainer. “No disrespect to him. Great coach. He got me to this point. He’s still around, but I feel like I need to venture out a little bit,” he added.
Before his loss to Haney, Norman Jr. had a stellar year, highlighted by a knockout victory over Jin Sasaki in June. This impressive win had set the stage for his showdown with Haney. Now, Norman Jr. is targeting a return to the ring in March or April, with a potential rematch against Haney on his radar.
“I need my belt back,” Norman Jr. asserted. “I don’t like losing at all. He’s got to see me again.” With his sights set on reclaiming his title, Norman Jr. is poised to make a strong comeback, driven by his determination and a renewed sense of purpose.
