In the wake of a devastating car accident on December 29, former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua found himself hospitalized in Lagos, Nigeria. The tragic incident claimed the lives of two of his closest companions, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele (Latz), who were integral members of his training team. Since this heart-wrenching event, the boxing community has been abuzz with speculation about Joshua’s future in the sport.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, recently shared his reflections on a poignant meeting with the boxer. Hearn, known for his close relationship with Joshua, posted a photo of their reunion, offering a glimpse into the emotional state of the champion. Speaking about the meeting, Hearn expressed the significance of face-to-face support during such trying times.

“It was the first time I’ve seen him since the accident,” Hearn revealed. “We’ve been in constant communication, but nothing compares to looking someone in the eye, feeling their presence, and showing your support in person. It was a good meeting, and I plan to spend more time with him in the coming weeks.”

Hearn acknowledged the profound impact of the loss on Joshua, describing him as one of the most positive individuals he has ever met. “You can tell he’s hurting,” Hearn said. “He’s lost two of his closest friends, two guys who lived with him, shared dreams, and had plans. These guys are irreplaceable, and it’s going to take time for him to heal.”

The driver involved in the fatal crash, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, faces four charges, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s license. Kayode recently appeared at the Sagamu Magistrate Court in southwestern Ogun State, with the case adjourned until February 25 at the prosecution’s request.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the accident and Joshua’s focus moving forward, Hearn shared, “I’ve never been in a situation like this before. I can’t imagine what he’s feeling or how the nights go or how the pain feels. At times like this, you can only do your best to be there for someone and the people around AJ as well.”

Hearn emphasized Joshua’s commitment to supporting the families of Sina and Latz, ensuring they are well taken care of. “AJ is very focused on the families of Sina and Latz,” Hearn said. “I’ve never been around them when they weren’t positive, lighting up a room with laughter and smiles. They will always be remembered.”

Regarding Joshua’s future in boxing, Hearn remained uncertain but hopeful. “Boxing-wise, it’s not the time, and I don’t know what he’ll do, honestly. I wouldn’t rule out anything, but I know that whatever he does, he wants to carry on in their names,” Hearn concluded.
