Eddie Hearn Shares Insights on Anthony Joshua’s Current State

In the wake of a heart-wrenching tragedy, Eddie Hearn, the renowned promoter, has shared an update on the well-being of heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. The incident, which occurred in Nigeria, has left the boxing community in a state of shock and sorrow.

On December 29, a devastating car accident took place around noon local time. Joshua, who was in Nigeria for a brief respite following his victorious bout against Jake Paul just ten days prior, was deeply affected by the event. The accident claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s closest companions and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.

The funerals for Ghami and Ayodele were held on January 4, where friends and family gathered to pay their respects and honor their memories. Hearn, in a recent interview, expressed his condolences and shared his thoughts on the tragic incident.

‘It was an incredibly tragic and horrifying event,’ Hearn stated. ‘The two individuals were not only incredibly close to Anthony Joshua but were also brimming with energy, passion, and commitment to AJ and his team. They were more than just teammates; they were among his best friends.’

Hearn emphasized the importance of giving Joshua the time and space he needs to heal physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually before making any decisions about his future. ‘I know that he will take his time, and he will need his time,’ Hearn said.

While Hearn believes that Joshua will eventually return to the ring, he stressed that this is not a priority during this difficult period of grief. ‘I do think he is going to return to boxing, but that will be his decision when the time is right,’ Hearn explained. ‘It is certainly not a conversation that I will be having with him anytime soon. The only conversation is ‘are you okay?”

Hearn also acknowledged that people often put on a brave face, but what Joshua is going through is far from normal and is heartbreaking for everyone involved. He expects Joshua to take an extended break from the sport and reiterated that any discussion about his future should come from Joshua himself.

‘When the time is right, I believe he will make his decision, and you will hear it from him,’ Hearn said. ‘The future of Anthony Joshua will be told by Anthony Joshua, and that is the only voice you should listen to.’

Joshua was initially scheduled to return to the ring in February, with a highly anticipated bout against long-term rival Tyson Fury planned for later in the year. However, given the circumstances, these plans are understandably on hold.
