In a somber moment for the boxing community, the world bids farewell to Ruben Castillo, a true icon of the featherweight division. Castillo, who valiantly challenged for the World Boxing Council Featherweight and Super Featherweight titles on four occasions, has passed away at the age of 68 in Bakersfield, California. His illustrious career, spanning from 1975 to 1997, left an indelible mark on the sport, even though a world title remained elusive.

Castillo’s professional journey was nothing short of remarkable. He embarked on his boxing career in 1975 and quickly rose through the ranks, achieving an impressive 42-0 record early on. By the time he hung up his gloves in 1997, Castillo had amassed a record of 67-10-2, with 35 of his victories coming by way of knockout. His relentless pursuit of greatness saw him face some of the most formidable opponents of his era, including Alexis Arguello, Salvador Sanchez, Juan LaPorte, and Julio Cesar Chavez.

Despite his world title aspirations not being realized, Castillo’s legacy is defined by his unwavering spirit and sportsmanship. He held the USBA Featherweight and WBO NABO Lightweight regional titles, showcasing his prowess in the ring. His final bout, a junior welterweight contest against Rudy Zavala, ended in a third-round stoppage, prompting Castillo to retire at the age of 39.

Beyond his boxing career, Castillo made significant contributions as a sports broadcaster for the Western United States sports channel ASPN, where he shared his expertise and passion for the sport until the network was sold. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and their five children. Castillo’s friendship with former world featherweight champion Juan LaPorte endured over the years, a testament to the respect and camaraderie he fostered within the boxing community.

Castillo’s performances against LaPorte and the late Salvador Sanchez are often regarded as his finest moments in the ring. In both world title bouts, Castillo went the distance, displaying his exceptional skill and determination. These fights, though losses, exemplified his heart and resilience, earning him admiration from fans and peers alike.

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman expressed his deep sadness upon learning of Castillo’s passing. In an official statement, Sulaiman said, “It is with deep sadness I have learned of the passing of my dear friend and champion Ruben Castillo. Now he is in the hands of God. May his wife, Cindy, family, and friends find comfort with the support of so many who loved Ruben.”

Ruben Castillo’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of boxers. His dedication, sportsmanship, and contributions to the sport will forever be remembered and celebrated.
