In a bold declaration that has sent ripples through the boxing world, Josh Kelly has pledged to upset the odds and emerge victorious in his upcoming world title bout against Bakhram Murtazaliev this Saturday. The high-stakes showdown, set to take place in Newcastle, will see Kelly challenge the formidable IBF super welterweight champion, Murtazaliev, in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Despite being the underdog with odds of 5/2 against him, Kelly, a 31-year-old former Olympian, exudes confidence. He believes he can defy expectations and halt Murtazaliev’s unbeaten streak of 23 professional bouts. Kelly’s strategy hinges on his ability to land punches from unexpected angles, a tactic he believes will unsettle his opponent.

“There will be a shift in his demeanor when he starts getting hit,” Kelly asserted. “He won’t know where the punches are coming from. I’ll feel that shift, and when I do, that’s when I’ll take control. I believe I will stop him.”

The first face-off between the two fighters took place on Tuesday in a packed gym in Newcastle, setting the stage for their upcoming clash. Murtazaliev, who will be making the second defense of his title, has not fought since his impressive victory over Tim Tszyu in October 2024. With 17 of his wins coming by way of knockout, Murtazaliev’s reputation precedes him. However, Kelly remains undaunted.

“All the pressure is on him,” Kelly stated. “He’s the world champion coming to my turf. I don’t feel any pressure on me. I believe his style plays into my strengths. Tim Tszyu is a good fighter, but he doesn’t have the movement, skill, ability, and ring IQ that I possess when I’m at my best.”

Kelly’s analysis of Tszyu’s approach against Murtazaliev reveals his strategic mindset. He believes Tszyu’s mistake was engaging in a direct exchange with Murtazaliev, a tactic Kelly plans to avoid. Instead, Kelly aims to use his superior movement and technical skills to outmaneuver and ultimately overcome the champion.

As the fight approaches, the anticipation continues to build. Kelly’s confidence and strategic acumen have set the stage for a potentially historic upset. Whether he can turn his words into actions remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: this Saturday’s bout will be a spectacle not to be missed.
