In a bold declaration, British boxer Josh Kelly has expressed his confidence in upsetting the odds against IBF super welterweight world champion Bakhram Murtazaliev in their upcoming title clash. The highly anticipated bout is set to take place at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle next Saturday, with Kelly aiming to dethrone the unbeaten Russian champion.

Kelly, known as ‘Pretty Boy,’ enters the ring as a significant underdog according to bookmakers. However, the 31-year-old Briton believes that Murtazaliev’s aggressive fighting style will play right into his hands. “All the pressure’s on him,” Kelly stated. “He’s the world champion coming over to my turf. I don’t feel any pressure on me, and I’m ready to perform.”

With seven consecutive wins under his belt since his only professional defeat to David Avanesyan in February 2021, Kelly is determined to become Britain’s sixth active male world champion. His recent winning streak has bolstered his confidence, and he sees Murtazaliev’s style as a perfect match for his own skills.

“Everyone wants to come and try to knock me out,” Kelly remarked. “The faster he comes, the harder he tries to punch, the more predictable he becomes. It all fits into my rhythm and timing.” Kelly’s strategy involves using Murtazaliev’s aggression against him, capitalizing on his movements and ring IQ to outmaneuver the champion.

Murtazaliev, aged 33, is making the second defense of his title against Kelly. In his last fight in October 2024, the Russian demonstrated his power by knocking down Tim Tszyu three times in a third-round demolition. However, Kelly insists that he possesses a far superior skillset compared to Tszyu and plans to avoid the mistakes he believes cost the Australian fighter the match.

“I believe Tim Tszyu is a good fighter,” Kelly acknowledged. “But he doesn’t have the movement, skill, ability, and IQ in the ring that I have when I’m on form. Tim made the mistake of going to the body early, and I won’t be making the same errors.”

As the fight night approaches, Kelly’s confidence and strategic mindset set the stage for what promises to be an electrifying showdown. Boxing enthusiasts eagerly await the clash, anticipating whether Kelly’s predictions will hold true in the ring.
