Keith Thurman Advises Ryan Garcia on Future Opponents

As Keith Thurman prepares for his upcoming bout against Sebastian Fundora on March 28, the former champion has shared his insights on Ryan Garcia’s career trajectory. Thurman, known for his strategic prowess, recently discussed Garcia’s potential opponents, highlighting who he should target and who he should avoid.

Ryan Garcia’s impressive victory over Barrios has solidified his position as a world champion and opened up a plethora of opportunities. Garcia’s swift and precise performance, marked by a first-round knockdown and a unanimous decision win, has left the boxing world eager to see his next move. The scorecards of 119-108, 120-107, and 118-109 reflected Garcia’s dominance in the ring, silencing any doubts about his capabilities.

Among the potential matchups for Garcia, a catchweight fight against Shakur Stevenson has garnered significant attention. However, Thurman advises caution. Speaking with authority, Thurman suggested that Garcia should consider a bout with Rolly instead. According to Thurman, Stevenson’s defensive skills and offensive talents make him a challenging opponent for many fighters. Thurman acknowledged Garcia’s power but questioned whether it would be enough to overcome Stevenson’s technical prowess.

Thurman elaborated, “Shakur is not a good match for a lot of people. Shakur is just very defensive and skillfully offensive. He’s got power on his side. Whenever you’re with a very skillful, talented, athletic person, it’s not a real fight if you don’t have some type of equalizer.” Thurman’s concerns extend to Stevenson’s potential performance at 147 pounds, a division currently populated by fighters who have moved up from lower weight classes.

Garcia, however, seems undeterred by Thurman’s warnings. The newly crowned WBC welterweight champion has expressed his desire to face Stevenson at 140 pounds, a weight class Garcia hasn’t competed in since April 2024. Garcia’s confidence in making the weight, provided there is no rehydration clause, underscores his determination to take on Stevenson on his terms.

In addition to his interest in a Stevenson bout, Garcia has also called out Devin Haney for a rematch. Garcia’s majority decision upset over Haney in April 2024 was later overturned due to a positive PED test. Despite the controversy, Garcia remains confident in his abilities and has challenged Haney to a rematch, asserting that he knows he lost the fight.

As the boxing world awaits Garcia’s next move, Thurman’s advice adds a layer of strategic consideration. Whether Garcia heeds Thurman’s warnings or forges his own path, his future fights promise to be exciting and closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
