In the realm of boxing, having a strategic edge can make all the difference, and for Matty Boreland, that edge comes in the form of his coach, Ryan Burnett. The Irish champion recently showcased a refined and composed fighting style at the Waterfront Hall, a departure from the aggressive approach that earned him the nickname ‘Bam Bam.’ Boreland’s polished performance is largely attributed to the meticulous guidance of Burnett, a former unified world champion.

Boreland, hailing from Coleraine, expressed his admiration for Burnett’s attention to detail. ‘Ryan is the best coach you could ever have, especially when it comes to the finer points,’ Boreland remarked. ‘You return to the corner, follow his instructions, and it works like magic. He advised me to step back and guide my opponent into the left hook—it was effective immediately. Having Ryan in your corner is like having a secret weapon.’

This victory marks another milestone in Boreland’s career, following his triumph over Rudy Farrell last September to claim Irish honors. At 27, Boreland believes that working closely with Burnett has honed every aspect of his game. While some fans may miss the thrilling, aggressive style of his earlier fights, observers noted a more composed and calculated Boreland, particularly in his defensive maneuvers and ability to avoid danger.

Despite his strong performance, Boreland admitted to a touch of frustration post-fight, disappointed that he did not secure a stoppage victory. ‘I’m slightly annoyed I didn’t finish him off,’ he confessed. ‘But it’s good to feel this way because it motivates me to go back and work on improvements rather than thinking everything was perfect.’

Boreland also shared insights into his newfound self-belief. ‘A lot of my issues stemmed from a lack of confidence in myself,’ he explained. ‘I didn’t think I was that good. Now, I feel like I have that extra bit of confidence, and it’s bringing out the best in me as a fighter.’

With Burnett’s guidance, Boreland is not just a fighter; he is a strategist, a thinker, and a polished athlete. The partnership between Boreland and Burnett is a testament to the power of mentorship and the impact it can have on an athlete’s career. As Boreland continues to evolve, the boxing world watches with anticipation, eager to see what this dynamic duo will achieve next.
