In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) outclassed Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) on January 31 at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York. Stevenson’s unanimous decision victory, with scorecards reading 119-109 across the board, earned him the prestigious Ring and WBO super lightweight titles. However, this triumph came with a twist, as Stevenson was subsequently stripped of his WBC lightweight belt, leaving fans and pundits alike speculating about his next move.

Josh Taylor, the former undisputed super lightweight champion, recently shared his thoughts on Stevenson’s impressive win and the potential challenges that lie ahead. Taylor, known for his own mastery in the ring, praised Stevenson’s performance, highlighting his defensive prowess and tactical aggression. “Stevenson was very good; he stood in the pocket and used his defense and patient boxing,” Taylor remarked. “He was very sharp with the counters, stepping to him, creating angles. It was good to watch.”

Taylor’s praise for Stevenson was unequivocal. He noted that Stevenson’s ability to combine patience with aggression is a rare and formidable trait. “He’s very good,” Taylor said. “We’re still to find someone who can properly take him into the trenches and make him think and adjust mid-fight.” This observation underscores Stevenson’s dominance in the super lightweight division, where Taylor sees few contenders capable of challenging him.

The WBC’s decision to strip Stevenson of his lightweight title was met with a statement acknowledging his historic achievements. Stevenson’s career has been marked by significant milestones, including capturing the WBC Continental Americas title in 2019 and the WBC Super Featherweight Championship in 2022. His move up to the lightweight division and subsequent defense of the Green and Gold belt on three consecutive occasions further solidified his elite status. The WBC’s statement concluded with well-wishes for Stevenson’s future endeavors, both inside and outside the ring.

Looking ahead, Taylor suggested that Stevenson’s future challenges might lie in the welterweight division. “There’s Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia—there’s still a few fighters who could make big fights,” Taylor said. This speculation opens up exciting possibilities for Stevenson’s career trajectory, as he continues to cement his legacy in the sport.

Stevenson’s recent comments on other combat sports have also made headlines. He expressed skepticism about former UFC star Jon Jones’ potential success in boxing and even extended an open challenge to UFC fighter Ilia Topuria. “Tell him to come fight me,” Stevenson said, showcasing his confidence and willingness to take on new challenges.

As Shakur Stevenson navigates the complexities of his career, one thing is clear: his talent and determination have positioned him as one of the most exciting figures in modern boxing. With potential matchups on the horizon and a legacy already in the making, Stevenson’s journey is far from over.
