In a recent interview, Teofimo Lopez, the current WBO super lightweight champion, issued a stark warning to his upcoming opponent, Shakur Stevenson. The two boxing titans are set to collide on January 31st at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lopez, known as ‘The Takeover,’ shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated matchup, offering a glimpse into the complex history and dynamics between the two fighters.

Lopez and Stevenson were once stablemates under the Top Rank promotion. Reflecting on their past, Lopez addressed Stevenson’s claims of jealousy, stating, “He mentioned various things, including how I was envious of him. But he was a 2016 USA silver medallist; he was always going to receive his signing bonus and additional perks.” Lopez believes their paths were destined to cross, with their careers seemingly on a collision course for years.

“The plan was to guide him on a different path, whereas I was perhaps seen as a future opponent,” Lopez explained. “Now, the tables have turned, and this plan is working against me.” Lopez enters the ring with an impressive record, boasting only one loss against George Kambosos Jr in late 2021. Since then, he has bounced back with a dominant shutout win against Arnold Barboza Jr in May of last year.

Stevenson, on the other hand, is making his debut in the super lightweight division. Lopez suggests that Stevenson’s move up in weight is driven by a lack of competition in his previous weight class. “Shakur is stepping up because he has no one else to challenge,” Lopez said. “He wants to prove a point, especially after his mentor, Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, made history by defeating Canelo Alvarez. I think these moments inspire Shakur to take on new challenges and face me.”

Despite Stevenson’s near-flawless record and Olympic pedigree, Lopez claims to have identified weaknesses in the 28-year-old’s game. “My job is to expose the true flaws that others cannot see,” Lopez asserted. “I aim to show the world that no one can beat me, and I will make it look effortless.” Stevenson, who has looked virtually untouchable throughout his career, is coming off an impressive victory against William Zepeda.

The stage is set for a thrilling encounter between two of boxing’s brightest stars. As the countdown to January 31st continues, the anticipation and excitement among boxing fans worldwide are palpable. Both fighters are determined to leave their mark and prove their dominance in the super lightweight division.
