Klaus’s journey into the ring began with successful street scraps that piqued his interest in boxing. He joined the Wilmerding Athletic Club, where his talent quickly became apparent. In a single night, he won two amateur tournaments in different weight classes, featherweight and lightweight, catching the eye of local impresario George Engel, who became his manager.
Klaus’s approach to boxing was as methodical and unyielding as his work in the factories and mines. He was a master of infighting, a style he detailed in his book, The Art of In-fighting. “In-fighting is the artillery of pugilism,” he wrote, “as continual pounding at the walls of the enemy’s defense gradually reduces him to capitulation.” This philosophy of hard work and persistence was a reflection of his upbringing and the industrial landscape that shaped him.
Constructed of solid muscle and with a jaw as hard as the coal he once mined, Klaus was a punching machine in the ring. His relentless style, honed by years of physical labor, wore down opponents with a stamina that seemed as endless as the steel mills’ production lines. Despite his industrial approach, promoters saw a more animalistic quality in his fighting, earning him the nickname “The Bearcat.”
