In a recent turn of events, Bayo Alabi has responded to Lee Gormley’s call-out with a challenge of his own. Alabi, a rising star in the featherweight division, has made it clear that he is ready to face Gormley, but only under certain conditions. The Dublin-based boxer insists that any potential bout should be for a title, and he has urged Gormley to secure a win and become eligible for a championship fight.
Alabi’s response comes after Gormley, the winner of the Irish Boxing Awards Domestic Fight of the Year, expressed his eagerness to return to all-Irish action and specifically mentioned Alabi as a potential opponent. Alabi, however, is not willing to engage in a mere exhibition match. “I saw Lee called me out,” Alabi stated. “He needs to get a win and then be eligible to fight me. Go get a win under your belt, and I’m sure we can put something together.”
The Dublin fighter did not mince words when addressing the online chatter surrounding their potential matchup. Despite being tagged in numerous social media posts by Gormley, Alabi revealed that the two have never even spoken. “I’ve never even spoken to the dude in my life,” Alabi said. “I don’t know why he’s tagging me and stuff.”
Alabi believes that being targeted by rivals is a sign of being underestimated, a perception he is eager to dispel. He confidently asserted that he is the best among the Irish title-level fighters in and around the featherweight division. “It just shows that everyone either thinks I’m the weak link—which is impossible—or they think I’m the best out of the bunch,” Alabi remarked. “For me, I feel like I’m the best.”
Returning to Gormley, Alabi reiterated his challenge. “He’s not my mate. If he wants it, he can get it,” Alabi said. “Just tell him to get a win.” It is understood that Gormley is scheduled to fight on Michael Conlan’s March 20 Belfast bill, which could provide him with the opportunity to secure the win Alabi has demanded.
As the boxing community awaits Gormley’s next move, Alabi’s challenge has added an extra layer of anticipation to the featherweight division. Will Gormley rise to the occasion and earn his shot at the title? Only time will tell.
