In a display of sheer determination and skill, the USA Boxing Elite High Performance Team wrapped up their campaign at the 77th International Strandja Boxing Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, with a flourish. The final day of competition, held on March 1, 2026, saw Lavant Brownlee and Lorenzo Patricio etching their names in the annals of boxing history by securing their first elite international medals.
Lavant Brownlee, a rising star in the 70-kilogram division, culminated his stellar week in Bulgaria with a gold medal. His journey to the top was marked by a series of impressive victories, including three unanimous decisions. In the finals, Brownlee faced off against Kazakhstan’s Farukh Tokhtassunov, emerging victorious with a 4-1 decision. His strategy of increasing pressure over the final six minutes of the bout proved to be a masterstroke, securing him the gold.
Brownlee’s performance throughout the tournament was nothing short of dominant. Out of his five bouts, only the final was decided by a split decision, with the rest being unanimous or a walkover. This consistency underscores his potential as a formidable force in the men’s 70-kilogram division.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo Patricio delivered a commendable performance in the 55-kilogram division. Despite a narrow 3-2 split decision loss to Ukraine’s Maksym Zymenko in the finals, Patricio’s silver medal is a testament to his skill and tenacity. The bout was a closely contested affair, with Patricio keeping the match competitive until the final round. This experience will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for his future endeavors, including the upcoming 2026 World Boxing Cup in Brazil.
The USA Boxing Elite High Performance Team’s overall performance at the tournament was impressive. Out of the 35 bouts contested, they secured 22 wins, resulting in a total of seven medals. This includes Brownlee’s gold, Patricio’s silver, and five bronze medals won by Yoseline Perez, Alyssa Mendoza, Simona Winkler, Naomi Graham, and Joseph Awinongya.
The team’s success is a reflection of their hard work and dedication. With 11 out of the 14 boxers earning at least one win in their respective brackets, the future looks bright for USA Boxing. As they prepare for the first World Boxing Cup of 2026, scheduled for April 20-26 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, the team carries with them the momentum and confidence gained from their triumphant campaign in Sofia.
