In a somber turn of events for the boxing community, Dennis ‘The Magician’ Milton, a revered figure in the middleweight division, has passed away at the age of 64. The Bronx native, known for his remarkable skills and unique superstitions, left an indelible mark on the sport during his illustrious career.
Milton’s journey in boxing was nothing short of extraordinary. He clinched the New York City Golden Gloves championship four times and secured two National AAU titles. His professional record, spanning from 1985 to 1995, stood at an impressive 16-5-1 with five knockouts. Among his most notable victories was a decisive win over future world champion Gerald McClellan in 1989, a fight that showcased Milton’s exceptional talent and strategic prowess.
His career reached a pinnacle when he challenged Julian Jackson for the World Boxing Association World Middleweight title in September 1991. Although Milton was defeated, his performance was a testament to his skill and determination. Jackson would later lose his title to McClellan in May 1993, highlighting the competitive nature of the era.
Milton’s career was marked by a series of remarkable victories, including bouts against Robbie Simms, Michael Olajide, Jose Antonio Martinez, and Pat Brennan. Despite his successes, Milton faced setbacks in his comeback attempts against Bernard Hopkins in 1992 and Aaron Davis in 1995, ultimately leading to his retirement from professional boxing.
Beyond his own career, Milton continued to contribute to the sport by training amateur boxers. One of his protégés, Arnold Gonzalez, achieved significant success, finishing second in the 2015 New York Golden Gloves and currently holding a professional record of 18-1, ranked 137th in the world at welterweight.
Milton’s unique superstitions, such as wearing a black sock only on his right foot, added to his enigmatic persona. This habit, born out of an oversight in his 1981 Empire State Games final bout, became a trademark of his boxing identity. Milton’s belief in creating his own luck resonated with many in the sport.
In his later years, Milton worked as a front desk security guard in New York City. His battle with dementia in the past year was a challenging chapter in his life, but his legacy in the boxing world remains untarnished. Dennis ‘The Magician’ Milton will be remembered for his skill, his unique personality, and his contributions to the sport he loved.
